BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav on Monday announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will come into force in the state in the current month.
His announcement comes amid apprehensions raised over the introduction of the UCC Bill in the ensuing five-day monsoon session of the state Assembly, commencing on July 20, following the extension of tenure of the committee constituted for preparing draft UCC Bill to July 26.
The six-member committee headed by retired judge of supreme court Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai, constituted in April this year to prepare a draft UCC Bill by consulting all stakeholders and examining such a Bill passed by some BJP-ruled states, was earlier asked to submit its report by July five to ensure that the Bill could be tabled in the House in the upcoming monsoon session after the approval by the state cabinet.
The state government has however extended the deadline for submission of the draft UCC Bill by the committee to July 26, following a request in this regard by the secretary of the body, sources said.
The chief minister’s announcement on Monday indicated that either the draft UCC Bill will be ready by closure of the monsoon session of the House or the treasury bench may seek extension of the session to ensure passage of the Bill in the Assembly, sources said.
