New Delhi:The Union government on Monday announced a ₹50 hike in the price of domestic LPG cylinders and increased excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre, but said the changes would not translate into higher pump prices for motorists. For Non‑Ujjwala consumers, it has been hiked from ₹803to 853.

Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the revision applies to both subsidised and general category customers. Last week, commercial LPG prices were cut by ₹41 per cylinder.

An official order raised excise duty to ₹13 per litre on petrol and ₹10 per litre on diesel, effective April 8. The finance ministry clarified that state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) will absorb the higher duty, offsetting it against retail price reductions that were due after recent declines in global crude prices. “There will be no increase in retail prices of petrol and diesel,” the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said.

The Modi‑led NDA government has frequently adjusted excise duties when global prices slide. Between November 2014 and January 2016, duties were raised nine times, boosting annual excise collections from ₹99,000 crore in 2014‑15 to ₹2.42 lakh crore in 2016‑17.
