Keralam, NCDC Bills Cleared
The NCDC amendment Bill, which amends the National Co-operative Development Corporation Act, 1962, was also passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
New Delhi: Parliament on Wednesday passed two Bills, including legislation to rename Kerala as Keralam and another expanding the mandate of the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC).
The Rajya Sabha passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, by voice vote, a day after it was cleared by the Lok Sabha. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said the legislation followed a resolution passed by the Kerala Assembly in 2024 urging the Centre to change the State’s name to Keralam.
The Upper House also passed the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to broaden the NCDC’s mandate and enable it to provide loans and grants directly to cooperative societies across the country.
The NCDC amendment Bill, which amends the National Co-operative Development Corporation Act, 1962, was also passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
With the Rajya Sabha’s approval on Wednesday, both Bills have now been cleared by Parliament.
