A man from Vijrawan village in Madhya Pradesh has sought to divorce his wife after she refused to observe Karwa Chauth rituals, prompting him to approach the police.

The Hindu festival of Karwa Chauth is known to strengthen the bond between a couple. However, it became a cause of marital discord between a husband and wife in a Madhya Pradesh village, pushing them to the verge of separation.

Bare Lal Adivasi, a resident of Vijrawan village under Badarwas police station in Shivpuri district, lodged a complaint with the local police station alleging that he feared a threat to his life from his wife, Mithilesh, as she had shunned the Karwa Chauth festival, which is observed for the long life of one's husband.

She neither observes a fast nor follows the ritual of worshipping the moon on the occasion, praying for his long life. Hence, he feared a threat to his life from her, the complaint said. He wanted to divorce his wife on these grounds, police said.

The bizarre complaint has landed the police in an awkward situation, leaving them groping in the dark as to how to deal with the issue. “This is a very unusual complaint. We will try to resolve the dispute by counselling the couple. A woman police officer will be tasked with the job,” Kolars Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Sanjay Mishra said.
