Humayun Kabir— DC File

BERHAMPORE: Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir on Wednesday announced his withdrawal from active politics with tears in his eyes and expressed his wish to resign as the MLA for Nowda in Murshidabad. He told the media that he would decide on his resignation after consulting members of his party following the Durga Puja festival.

Speaking in a choked voice, Kabir said, “I am bidding farewell to active politics voluntarily. I also beg people of Rejinagar and Nowda assembly constituencies unconditionally to pardon me for ending my political career of 43 years.”
His announcement came a day after he faced arrest for allegedly physically and verbally abusing police during the Rejinagar assembly bypoll.
Kabir said the humiliation he had faced at the hands of police had compelled him to end his political career. “I will no longer visit the Assembly and take my seat (No 88 number) in the House,” he said.
However, he later said he would continue to serve the voters of Nowda as their MLA until he obtained their consent to resign. He also said he could attend assembly sessions conditionally.
He, however, vowed not to face chief minister Suvendu Adhikari or attend meetings of the assembly’s standing committees.
Expressing confidence that his son Golam Nabi Azad would win the Rejinagar bypoll by 30,000 votes, he promised to complete the construction of his dream project, a Babri Masjid-style mosque at Beldanga.
He was booked in two FIRs, at Bidhannagar cyber police station in Salt Lake and Tala police station in North Kolkata, following complaints lodged by the BJP alleging that he had fomented communal tensions.
