Kolkata: In fresh unrest in Jadavpur University on Thursday afternoon, ABVP supporters breached police barricades and reached the locked entrance of the varsity's gate number 4, while Left-leaning students gathered in large numbers inside the campus to resist the attempted entry.
A group of SFI supporters also clashed with the police outside the university at the 8B bus stand area in the southern part of Kolkata, after they attempted to breach security barricades and march towards gate number 4.
The developments took place after a clash broke out between members of ABVP and Left-leaning student groups inside JU campus in the early hours of the day, with both sides accusing each other of bringing outsiders into the campus, varsity officials said.
In the afternoon, when the Left-leaning students inside the campus were trying to resist the entry of ABVP supporters, they alleged that the right-wing supporters hurled eggs at them from outside the locked gate and pelted water bottles despite the presence of local police, RAF and central paramilitary troops.
Some ABVP supporters were witnessed trying to scale the locked gate number 4 in their attempt to get inside the campus.
The SFI supporters at the other end of the road alleged several of their workers were injured in the clashes with police.
Till reports last received, the agitating Left supporters at the 8B bus stand area outside the campus were holding a sit-in after they were stopped by the police from proceeding any further.
Teachers and students at the campus displayed the varsity's emblem which was pulled down from the gate, and questioned the intention of the agitating ABVP students, accusing them of vandalising the premises.
Dramatic scenes were witnessed when both SFI and ABVP supporters scuffled with the security forces in a bid to enter the campus from two different ends of the same road while the men in uniform struggled to keep them at bay.
