Bhopal: The cost of Indore metro rail project has been revised to Rs 19,472.29 crore from the original sanctioned project cost of Rs 7,500.80 crore.
Over time, revisions, and additional alignments have been integrated into the plan, sanctioned by the Centre in 2018, with the total financing package expanding to meet new infrastructural and underground construction demands, officials said while explaining the cost escalation of the project.
The state cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of chief minister Mohan Yadav, on Tuesday approved the revised Indore metro rail project budget.
In the first phase, the Indore metro rail service covered six km and commercially operationalized and the extended 11-km second phase of the project is likely to be flagged off on June 20, officials said.
Since the launch of the first phase of the project on May 31, 2025, the service has attracted only 2.5 lakh passengers in the first year, recording a low average ridership.
However, the extended second phase project is expected to establish steady transit demand and financial sustainability since it will have access to Indore's Central business hub, officials said.
The revised Indore metro rail project cost is a part of the proposals worth Rs 24,200 crore, which was approved by the state cabinet.
The other significant project, which received the nod by the state cabinet, was Rs 2,381.15 crore-“Project Tiger and Elephant”.
The project envisaged wildlife conservation and rehabilitation, and compensation related to 94 villages located in sensitive areas.
