New Delhi: External affairs minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday said he had a “good interaction” with a three-member United States Congressional delegation, during which they discussed various aspects of bilateral relations, the Indo-Pacific situation and the Russia-Ukraine war. The delegation included US lawmakers Jimmy Patronis, Mike Rogers and Adam Smith. US Ambassador Sergio Gor, who was present at the meeting, described the discussions as “productive,” saying they focused on strengthening ties in areas such as security, trade and critical technologies. The two sides are currently engaged in negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that India plans to slash tariffs on cars imported from the European Union to 40 per cent from as high as 110 per cent, according to sources as the two sides close in on a free trade pact that could come as early as Tuesday.

In a post on X, Jaishankar said he had a “wide-ranging and productive conversation” with the EU High Representative, noting the growing comfort level and strong convergence in the India–European Union partnership. He said the two sides agreed to intensify exchanges and advance their cooperative agenda. The external affairs minister also said it was a privilege for India to have European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa as Chief Guests at the Republic Day parade on Monday. Expressing confidence ahead of their talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, he said the discussions would herald a new chapter in India–EU relations.
