India Awaits Bangladesh Response on Nationality Verification
The Centre had earlier this month urged Bangladesh to expedite nationality verification, describing it as a core issue affecting repatriation of illegal immigrants.
New Delhi:India on Friday said it expects an early response from Bangladesh on requests for verification of nationality of persons suspected to be illegal immigrants, to facilitate their deportation under existing bilateral arrangements.
“Once it (the verification by Bangladesh) is done, we will be in a position to deport them,” ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a weekly briefing.
The Centre had earlier this month urged Bangladesh to expedite nationality verification, describing it as a core issue affecting repatriation of illegal immigrants.
At a previous briefing, the spokesperson had said over 2,800 cases of nationality verification were pending with Bangladesh, some for more than five years. He reiterated that repatriation of illegal foreign nationals would be carried out in accordance with Indian laws, procedures and established bilateral mechanisms.
India said it was seeking cooperation from Bangladesh to enable smooth repatriation of such individuals.
