Bhopal: Incessant rains for the past one week have wreaked havoc in Madhya Pradesh, causing floods in major rivers and marooning many villages.

Over 200 villages in at least half-a-dozen districts in the state have been marooned by the flood water, leaving several hundred people trapped, officials said on Wednesday.

Twenty-seven school children, trapped in the village of Panchawali under Kolaras in Shivpuri district for the last 30 hours, were rescued by the army in a boat in the afternoon, official reports reaching here said.

“Around 2,900 people have been rescued safely in the districts of Shivpuri, Guna, Morena, Rewa, Raisen, Damoh and Ashok Nagar and moved to the relief camps”, chief minister Mohan Yadav who conducted a live review of the ongoing rescue operation in the flood-affected areas in the state on Wednesday, said.

He said rescue and relief works in the flood-affected areas have been carried out on war-footing.

Mr. Yadav said to expedite the rescue and relief works, the state government has sought choppers from the Ministry of Defence for their deployment in rescue and relief operations.

A helicopter is currently deployed in the rescue operations in Ashok Nagar district.

Reports reaching from different parts of the state said the floods have caused damage to some minor bridges in the state.

Several major rivers like Narmada and her tributaries are flowing above danger levels at several places in the state.

The floods in these rivers have marooned many villages situated in their banks, leaving the local people stranded, the reports said.

“Considering the likelihood of continued rainfall over the next two-three days, all district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert and in a constant state of readiness”, the chief minister said.
