Uttar Pradesh: Crowd Rushes To Pick Expired Chocolates From Garbage
Video of people collecting discarded confectionery items goes viral, sparks public health and food safety concern
Kanpur: Disturbing and bizarre scenes unfolded in Kanpur’s Panki Industrial Area in Uttar Pradesh as a massive crowd swarmed a garbage dump to collect expired chocolates and toffees allegedly discarded by a local factory. Videos circulating on social media shows individuals scooping up handfuls of boxes of discarded chocolates and toffees directly off the ground and carrying away boxes in bags, sacks, and containers.
According to the reports from local residents, the confectionery items were dumped near the Panki highway area, close to a fertiliser factory. As the word spread, people rushed to the site to pick up the expired items off the dump.
The incident has raised significant public health and food safety concerns, as consuming expired confectionery poses notable health risks. The viral footage has also reopened debate surrounding industrial waste protocols, highlighting the need for controlled proper destruction of unsellable and expired food items to prevent discarded goods from ending up back in public consumption.
An official confirmation of the incident is still awaited, and authorities have not yet released a detailed statement on the matter.
