Tarun Garg Becomes First Indian to Lead Hyundai Motor India Ltd

Gurugram: Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) on Wednesday announced that Mr. Tarun Garg has assumed charge as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. The appointment marks a historic milestone, as Mr. Garg becomes the first Indian national to head HMIL since its inception nearly 29 years ago, underscoring the growing strategic importance of India within the global automotive ecosystem.

With over three decades of experience in the automotive industry, Mr. Garg is set to lead HMIL into its next phase of growth. His appointment reflects Hyundai Motor Group’s confidence in Indian leadership and the country’s role as a key hub for innovation, manufacturing, and exports.Expressing his vision, Mr. Garg said India’s automotive sector is at a crucial inflection point, driven by innovation, sustainability, and evolving customer aspirations. He noted that it is an honour to lead Hyundai Motor India at a defining moment in its three-decade journey, adding that his focus will be on sustainable growth, technological leadership, and delivering unmatched customer experiences. He also reiterated HMIL’s commitment to ‘Make in India’ while strengthening its position as a global export hub, aligned with Hyundai’s global vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.According to the company, Mr. Garg’s leadership will be anchored on four strategic pillars: accelerating future-ready mobility solutions including electric vehicles, hybrids and connected technologies through a ₹45,000 crore investment roadmap by FY 2030; empowering people and strengthening dealer and supplier networks; deepening customer trust through seamless experiences; and enhancing indigenisation to position HMIL as a manufacturing and export base for emerging markets.Mr. Garg has been associated with HMIL in key leadership roles, including Head of Sales, Service and Marketing, and later as Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer. During his tenure, the company recorded three consecutive years of record sales, achieved its highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins, and successfully executed India’s largest IPO in 2024. HMIL also strengthened its leadership in the SUV segment with a strong focus on profitability, customer experience, and digitalisation.Beyond business performance, Mr. Garg is known for his people-centric leadership. He played a key role in launching ‘Samarth by Hyundai’, an initiative aimed at enhancing awareness and accessibility for people with disabilities across India.Before joining HMIL, Mr. Garg built a distinguished career at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, where he rose to the position of Executive Director overseeing marketing, logistics, and parts and accessories. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from Delhi Technological University and holds an MBA from IIM Lucknow.Under his leadership, Hyundai Motor India is expected to chart an ambitious growth trajectory, setting new benchmarks in innovation, customer focus, and long-term value creation in the Indian automotive market.
