Bhubaneswar : The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhubaneswar has successfully performed its first liver transplant, marking a major milestone in the institute’s ability to provide advanced, life-saving surgical care. Both the donor and the recipient are stable and recovering well, more than 10 days after the procedure, hospital authorities said.

The transplant was performed on a middle-aged man suffering from decompensated liver failure caused by alcoholic liver disease. A living donor liver transplant was carried out, with the patient’s younger brother donating 40 per cent of his liver. The surgery, conducted on December 20, lasted nearly 14 hours and involved a multidisciplinary team of over 50 medical professionals.

Professor Manas Kumar Panigrahi, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said the successful procedure was the result of sustained preparation and infrastructure development over the past several years.

“Liver transplantation is a highly complex procedure. Over the last two to three years, we have worked to develop the necessary infrastructure, protocols and monitoring systems. With the support of our transplant team, we were finally able to carry out this surgery successfully,” said Prof. Panigrahi.

He said the patient’s condition required meticulous pre-operative management.

“The recipient had advanced liver failure with ascites and an associated umbilical hernia. We first optimised his condition by reducing abdominal fluid to ensure the surgery could be performed safely,” he added.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Dr Ashutosh Biswas confirmed that both the donor and the recipient had shown good post-operative recovery. “It has been over 10 days since the surgery. Both patients are doing well, and the donor has already been discharged without any complications,” he said.

Dr Biswas added that the recipient would remain under close medical supervision in the coming weeks and months to monitor recovery and liver graft function.

The successful transplant is the first of its kind at AIIMS Bhubaneswar and is expected to significantly expand access to advanced liver care for patients from Odisha and neighbouring states.
