Warangal red chilli hits all-time high of Rs 90K per quintal

WARANGAL: The price of red chilli hit a record of Rs 90,000 per quintal at an auction held at the Enumamula agriculture market, Asia’s biggest such market, in Hanumakonda district on Thursday.
Experts said that the price of red chilli has been shooting up, propelled by demand in the international market, over the past few months in the Warangal region.
The chilli stock that sold for the record price was supplied by Kancha Ashok, who is a farmer from Hybatpalli village in Parkal mandal of Warangal district. The winning bid went to Lakshmi Sai Traders.
In 2021, red chilli had hit a then record price of Rs 55,551 per quintal, but shot up by over 62 per cent this time around. As recently as July and September beginning, red chilli was being sold for Rs 32,000-Rs 35,500 per quintal.
The record price comes as a relief to chilli farmers, who were a worried lot at the beginning of the season due to attacks of invasive pest viruses. Despite the yield falling this year, they were buoyed by the spike in prices.
The record price is likely to create a rush among chilli farmers to bring their produce from the second crop to the Enumamula market.
