KARIMNAGAR: Tension prevailed in Korutla town of Jagtial district on Monday when revenue officials tried to remove the temporary huts built by homeless people using JCB machines. Protesting the move, the residents along with leaders of CPM staged a dharna in front of the revenue divisional office (RDO). Police intervened and detained the protesting leaders and residents.  A heated argument ensued between the police officials and hut dwellers who did not allow the police to arrest the CPM leaders who were supporting them.

The hut dwellers said that they had made makeshift homes on government land at Sangem Road in the town two months ago as they had no permanent dwelling and were not able to pay high rents. They claimed that they were living with their families at the location only after obtaining permission from the RDO. All of a sudden, the officials and police came to demolish our homes without even giving us any information, the hut-dwellers rued.

They demanded the state government allot them housing sites and allow them to construct houses there. They warned that they would intensify protests if the government failed to provide them with house sites.
