NEW DELHI: On the birth anniversary of Veer Damodar Savarkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, several Union ministers, and senior BJP leaders, including national president J.P. Nadda, paid floral tributes to Savarkar in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building. Coincidentally, the new Parliament building was also inaugurated by the Prime Minister on the same day.

Union home minister Amit Shah, in a tweet in Hindi, paid homage to Savarkar, acknowledging his role in igniting the lamp of patriotism in the hearts of countless Indians with his thoughts.

“The patriotism, sacrifice and dedication of Veer Savarkar ji is praiseworthy and will continue to inspire the people of the country for ages,” Shah tweeted.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a tweet, referred to the significance of May 28, saying Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated on this day in 1964. He recalled that the late PM played a crucial role in nurturing parliamentary democracy in India.

He also pointed out Savarkar's birth in 1883, highlighting the ideological ecosystem associated with him, which was linked to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Ramesh further criticised the Prime Minister, describing him as a ‘self-glorifying’ authoritarian leader with disregard for parliamentary procedures, who rarely attends or engages in parliamentary activities, while inaugurating the New Parliament building in 2023.
