Mysuru: Earthen diyas huge hit among young IT professionals

Mysuru: With just a day left for the Festival of Lights, a huge crowd is flocking to Deepa Saundarya, a unique expo of more than 5000 designs of traditional earthen lamps, organised by Ramsons Prathishtana, at Nazarbad here.

Brushing aside the challenge from electric lamps traditional potters of Kumbargere here and more than 100 artistes from other parts of Karnataka, West Bengal,  Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Varanasi in UP and Jaipur in Rajasthan have prepared eco-friendly, traditional and classical earthen diyas giving them a touch of creativity and painting them in vibrant colours. The visitors are not only local people, even a large number of youngsters working in IT companies in Bengaluru, and NRIs are making a beeline for the expo, according to Mr R.J. Singh, the organiser.

The traditional diyas include those shaped like conch shells, towers, huts, multiple diyas with traditional Deepalakshmi, Hamsa deepas, hanging lanterns and floating lamps which can be accommodated in the shrinking spaces in modern households. There are earthen vessels for arranging floating lamps to add aesthetic value to the house, and Rangoli designs to decorate houses. Kids are usually given money by elders as a blessing during Diwali and a variety of earthen piggy banks have also found their place at the expo.
