Pune: Police have arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a girl and her mother after the latter prevented civic officials from taking away stray puppies they had given shelter to.

The incident took place at a housing society in suburban Kothrud.

The accused, Milind Kale, was arrested under sections 325 (causing grievous hurt), 354 (outraging modesty of woman), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

CCTV footage of the incident in which the accused is seen hitting the two women with a shoe went viral on social media.

According to the police, a stray female dog in the area gave birth to four puppies and died a few days later.

"The complainant, who is an animal lover, started taking care of four puppies. Yesterday Kale who lived in the same society, called up the municipal authorities and asked them to take away the puppies," said inspector Radhika Phadake of Kothrud police station.

When the municipal officers came, the complainant did not allow them to take away the puppies, saying they were only two months old.

"Officials returned empty handed and an irked Kale then hit both the 20 years old daughter and her mother with his shoe. The complainant lost a tooth in the scuffle," said the inspector.

Kale was arrested and was produced in the court which remanded him in one-day police custody.
