KOZHIKODE: Are you an environmental-friendly person who is ready to contribute to the society? Then you should not miss this Nepal stall run by Shailaja Kayasth Kasaju in the International Craft Fest at Irinagl. The stall has bags, laptop sleeves made from hemp and diaries and keychain made from the lokta papers. Hemp is an industrial, eco-friendly fabric plant in cannabis genus. "The benefits of using the hemp products are many like, it is a strong fabric and also non-allergic. It is best for hot climate as it resists the ultraviolet rays", Shailaja told the Deccan Chronicle.

The trendy look of the bag with a soft touch ensures high demand even though the cost of the handmade product is high.  "The material softens with further use and it kills the bacteria which come in contact with it", Shailaja further explains. Yet another craft product is the handmade lokta paper diaries and key chains from Nepal Paper Plant or Lokta Bush. It is known for its durability and long-lasting quality.

"In Nepal, since the 12th century, the Lokta paper is being used. The paper was used in ancient times to write documents and traditional treaties. It is still popular among enthusiasts and the most sold out item in my stall is the diary made from lokta paper", said Shailaja. The products are made by the women's groups in Nepal and the profit amount is using for lodging, food, and education of the poor girl children who are affected by the earthquake. Shailaja, a first timer in the craft fest is expecting more crowds in up-coming days.
