Chennai: Charred BSNL cable repair works at Purasawalkam were almost completed on Sunday, as the telephone operator worked incessantly, by forming six teams. Of the 2,820 cable wires that were destroyed in the small hours of Saturday, most of the lines, barring 200, are functional, say BSNL officials.

The cause of destruction due to short circuiting between the BSNL and EB cables, which also burnt the cable termination point and rack equipment at the exchange is yet to be ascertained, General Manager of BSNl, North, Leela Shankari told DC.

“As soon as the incident happened, we switched off the cable lines. Cables were burnt till the exchange. Forming six teams, we rectified the cables by Sunday morning. Most of the cables were rectified by Saturday afternoon itself,” she added.

However, as problems are identified in 200 cables, the officials would work again on them, she said. According to the officials, electric charring at the Purasawalkam exchange had occurred before. “We are not aware of whose cables are laid first. We should locate it to avoid the repetition of the problem,” said an official.
