OOTY: A ‘Badaga’ dance performed with the highest number of participants in a single venue organised by a private college in Nilgiris on Friday entered the ‘Elite book of World Records’. The ‘Badaga folk dance’ of the ‘Badagas’, who form the single largest ethnic community in the Nilgiris is famous.

It is so much etched in the collective memory of the Nilgiris people that they instantly recall how even late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa danced with ‘Badaga dancers’ in the past. The Nilgiri College of Arts and Science (NCAS) at Thaloor on the Nilgiris border near Gudalur, has set a new world record with this ‘Badaga dance’ now.

Dr M. Dorai, principal of NCAS, said that ‘Badaga dance’ was staged in the NCAS on Friday with the participation of 1,570 artistes, that included students, teachers, parents and general public, who joined to create history.

Ameet Hingoroni, Asia Pacific Ambassador of the ‘Elite Book of World Records’ officially handed over the certificate to Rashid Gazzali, managing trustee and secretary of NCAS. The world record event was conducted at NCAS campus as part of ‘Edu Expo 2018’ being held between February 22 and 24, he added.
