Women's panel to move Supreme Court in Hadiya case

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Women's Commission will approach the Supreme Court seeking permission to visit Hadiya, 25, a homoeopathic doctor, who was put in the protective custody of her parents by the Kerala High Court in June after it annulled her marriage on the charge of ‘love jihad.’ Commission chairperson M. C. Josephine told the media that it plans to visit Hadiya and prepare a status report to be submitted to the court.
Hadiya alias K. M. Akhila had converted to Islam last year and married a Muslim, Shafin Jahan. The activists who visited Hadiya in the last few days allege that her parents had forcibly confined her to her house near Kottayam. A delegation of activists had met Ms Josephine earlier and submitted a memorandum to her to intervene in the case. “We do not intend to aggravate the social situation further for Hadiya. Several women’s organisations have also sent petitions to the SWC,” she said.
Visitors have been barred from meeting Hadiya in her residence, which is guarded by the police. The apex court had asked the National Investigation Agency to probe the marriage. Shafin Jahan has pleaded before the Supreme Court to cancel the NIA probe.
