Kochi: The state police will provide security to the Kochi Metro Rail project as per a proposal sent by KMRL  to the police department seeking security for the entire  system.    The KMRL officials met  DGP (Intelligence) A. Hemachandran and held discussions in this connection.  The police had  also  conducted a survey recently to analyse the security for Metro.

“We got the request and a meeting was held to discuss the issue. Once the state government gives us the  final nod,  the state police will take over the security,” a top police official told Deccan Chronicle.

Kochi Metro has sought at least two cops at each station  but police are  willing to deploy four cops in three shifts.

KMRL officials said that they will provide basic training for the cops on deputation for Metro  duty. KMRL is  to invite tender for the private security agency also.

“There are a lot of areas to be discussed. We need to scrutinise each and every detail before going ahead with the project,” the police source added.  The officers of the state will be heading the operations.

The security of the KMRL is a three-tier system. Inside the Metro coaches, a private security agency will do the basic frisking of passengers, if needed. Since the private security agencies cannot take any legal action, they will hand over the person to police, if found suspicious.
