Naval ship INS Kabra draws many in Kollam

The ship meant for coastal surveillance, anti-piracy and island support is at the port as part of Navy Week celebrations.

KOLLAM: Naval ship INS Kabra,  which has  docked at  Kollam port, has proved to be huge attraction for the people, including school and college students. The ship meant for coastal surveillance, anti-piracy and island support is at the port as part of Navy Week celebrations. “The ship  belonging to the Southern Naval Command  in Kochi is propelled  based on water jet technology, enabling it to attain speeds up to 32 knots or more. The ‘water jet fast attack craft’ acts swiftly in case of emergency and intrusions into water boundaries. The ship was also involved in several rescue operations of stranded fishing boats. The programme is to familiarise the public with the working environment and its equipment, ” commander Dharmendra Singh Bareth,  captain,  who hails from Jaipur, told DC.

The ship armaments  comprise   an indigenous 30mm CRN-91 gun along with a day/night fire control system and wide range of machine guns and shoulder launched surface-to-air missiles. It also has the latest navigation and communication facilities onboard. The crew members include four officers and 45 sailors. The ship has been safeguarding the coast of Kerala and the islands of Lakshadweep and Minicoy through its  routine coastal patrols.
