Khammam: Is the rythu bazaar (RB) located at the DCC Office on Wyra Road being given to a multi-national company to set up an integrated complex?

The rumour is doing the rounds among the public in Khammam. The farmers as well as customers liked the rythu bazaar. Farmers sell vegetables there directly and get good revenue. The people buy vegetables at reasonable prices.

The officials closed the RB during lockdown and it was not revived after Unlock-4, though other RBs started functioning. Khammam farm market committee chairperson, Maddineni Venkata Ramana, said that a complex will be coming up at the site and where all products required will be available.

Sources in the government say that an integrated market complex will come up at the site. They hint that the complex will be run by a multinational company. The farmers started an agitation against it after the news spread.

The site is in a prime location and is more than half an acre (2,500 square yards). It is learnt that the land will be given to the MNC on lease at a nominal fee. The assistant collector’s office is located adjacent to the RB and will be shifted.

Three farmers climbed a cell tower at Khanapuram Haveli police station and threatened that they would end their lives by jumping down if the government did not open the RB.

The BJP took up the issue and organised struggles against the move. Hundreds of BJP activists tried to lay siege to the collectorate. Bharatiya Kisan Morcha state president, K. Sridhar Reddy alleged that minister Jay Kumar connived with the corporate forces to hand over the land to them.

“The RB is very helpful to the farmers and people. There is no need to close it and we will not allow it.”
