Kochi: Amid protests against new traffic regulations implemented at key junctions like Vytilla and Edapally, the Kochi Traffic Police on Friday claimed the reforms have led to a substantial fall in mishaps. In the first seven months this year, a total of 83 accidents claiming six lives and injuring 76 people were reported from four major junctions – Kundanoor, Vytilla, Palarivattom and Edapally. A total of 34 accidents took place in Vytilla Junction in which three persons died and 36 were injured.

Similarly, 21 accidents were reported in Palarivattom junction, 18 in Edappally, 12 in Kundanoor, according to the statistics provided by the police. “However, in August when the new traffic regulations came in, only five accidents in which two persons were injured, have been reported from all these junctions. No death has been reported. The figures are less compared to the accident rate of the previous year,” the police said in a statement.

“The cops have taken various measures like strict enforcement of laws to prevent accidents. Action is being taken against illegal parking. Such vehicles are being seized and removed using recovery vehicles. Directions have been given to police personnel to inform the concerned authorities when they notice roads in bad condition,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Arul R B Krishna.
