HYDERABAD: Doctors at the Gandhi Hospital performed the first-ever cochlear implant surgery at the institution on Monday. A team of surgeons led by Dr.Shobhan Babu, head of the ENT department performed the surgery. The procedure was performed to correct the hearing loss of a three-year-old child. It
involves implanting an electronic device in the ear to improve hearing. Doctors said a cochlear implant had not been done at Gandhi Hospital until now as it was an expensive and long procedure, which costs about `15 lakh at private hospitals. It was performed free of cost at the Gandhi hospital, under the Arogyashri scheme. Health Minister T. Harish Rao on Monday congratulated the doctors, in a Tweet.
