KOZHIKODE: A team of 20 families in Kozhikode, who are lovers of Kayaking and other water sports, are now on a mission to clean river Chaliyar of plastic and other waste. Coming under the umbrella of ‘Jellyfish’, a club in Cheruvannur that promotes Kayaking, Canoeing, stand-up pedalling, rowing, sailing etc., the team, on Saturday, officially started the cleaning mission - Catch of the Day.

“The sailors will collect the garbage floating on the river in the Kayak itself. After reaching the shore, the waste will be collected in a bin, exclusively for the purpose. We are holding discussions with many NGOs who are interested in recycling the plastic collected from the river,” said Kaushik Kodithodi, who founded the club.

Mr Kaushik, who works in Dubai, started this club three years ago to promote water sports and found people with similar interests. Now, they plan to extend the activities to Kadalundi river also, after successfully clearing the waste from Chaliyar. They are planning to implement the project with the support of panchayats, municipalities and corporations.

V.K.C. Mammedkoya MLA inaugurated the project. Coast Guard Malabar Commanding officer Commandant A R Chauhan, Port Officer Captain Ashwini Pratap and Councillor M. Sreeja Hareesh attended the project’s inauguration.
