Telangana HC orders clean up of quarantine centres
The quarantine centres were established in hostels and residential buildings meant for government employees
Hyderabad: Based on a Deccan Chronicle report on the pathetic conditions at quarantine centres, which was suo motu (by itself) taken up as a public interest litigation, the Telangana High Court on Monday directed the state government to maintain hygiene in such establishments and house one person in each room. The court also sought a report on the quarantine centres.
A division bench comprising Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice T. Amarnath Goud on Monday heard the PIL and passed the order.
When the matter came up for adjudication on Monday, Advocate General B.S. Prasad explained that the state government had taken steps to improve the facilities in the quarantine centres when the issue came to its notice.
The quarantine centres were established in hostels and residential buildings meant for government employees.
Deccan Chronicle, in its report ‘Quarantine facilities dirty’ published on March 20 had reported on the lack of basic facilities at these premises, where two to three passengers, and on some occasions more than five passengers, were put up in a single room.
The rooms had bed bugs, cockroaches and mosquitoes. The toilets were defunct and did not have running water. There was inadequate supply of drinking water, the report had stated.
The report was taken up as a suo motu PIL on the directions of Chief Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan.
