Kottayam: Police on Tuesday said they had found fake 1,000-denomination banknotes of Rs 2.58 lakh abandoned near a waste pile on a roadside at Kuttikkanam near Peermade. Idukki special branch DySP V.N. Saji said an unidentified person passed the information through a text message Monday night and the police who reached the spot in the morning found the counterfeit currencies near the Valanjanganam waterfalls on the Kottayam-Kumily Road.

"All of the notes were fake but of high-quality printing making it difficult to differentiate from the original. Most of them have the same serial numbers," he told DC. "We have registered a case, and started an investigation. We received no clue to their source." Previously, there were reports regarding the circulation of fake currencies in Idukki district on various occasions, believed to be originated from Tamil Nadu.
