Move to evict encroaches from railway land

Hyderabad: The railway ministry acknowledged that 0.17 per cent of its land had been encroached upon but said that it had very well established system is in place to recover the land. esponding to a report in these columns, ‘Railway land easy to loot’, (August 21), the ministry said that apart from maintenance of land records, there was periodic inspection by railway officials and prevention and removal of encroachment as per the law.

This was monitored by the zonal railway headquarters as well as the Railway Board. The ministry said that eviction of encroachers is a very lengthy and protracted processes involving multiple agencies and, in many cases, litigations. “Railways also face the problems of resistance against the encroachment removal drive on social and humanitarian ground raised in various forums.”

Despite this, the railways over the past four years has retrieved 93.33 hectares from encroachment.
