Mankulam forest department on a high over ecotourism projects

Mankulam division's projects at three destinations will attract lovers of scenic beauty.

Kottayam: Mankulam forest division's ecotourism projects at three tourism destinations 30 kilometres away from Munnar in Idukki district will attract lovers of scenic beauty and natural waterfalls. The projects are coming up at Kainakari, Anakulam and Nakshathrakuth. The peculiarities of these places are the waterfalls at Kainakari and Nakahathrakuth and chances of spotting wild elephants drinking from Anakulam river.

"This will be the Phase 1 of the three. These places have been developed as ecotourism spots where the tourists will also enjoy trekking inside the forests," B.N. Nagaraj, the DFO, told DC. Two information centres will be established at Kainakiri and Anakulam for the visitors. They can also watch the art forms displayed of the tribal population including dance.

A five-room accommodation for tourists was set up at Viripara near Kainakary by converting an old government building. Apart from this, 275 people will be provided gas connections under the Green India Mission for reducing the forest dependency of the tribal population. The tourists can reach these destinations from Adimaly or Munnar. Forest minister K Raju will inaugurate them and distribute of the free gas connections at the St Joseph's LP School, Anakulam, on Monday.
