Thiruvananthapuram: Every school student in the state will be taught Yoga and swimming. Sports Minister E.P. Jayarajan said  this at the inaugural function of 17 clubs at Government Central High School, Attakkulangara, on Thursday. A synthetic swimming pool which can be transported from one school to another will be used, the minister said. It will be a week’s crash course. All schools can avail of this facility, he  said.

The details of the two programmes are being charted out, and steps towards this will be taken at the earliest. “The Yoga instructors will be from the sports department. A weekly morning class over weekends will introduce the children to a few items. They can utilise the rest of the week to practise what they learnt every day,” he said.

The authorities at the Attakkulangara school had requested the sports department for some sports infrastructure in the school, so that it would benefit other city schools. School Samrakshana Samithi president E.M. Radha said, “the secretary from the sports department had visited the school in connection with this. However, the government order transferring 2 acres of the school land to TRIDA needs to be cancelled.”

The GO was issued during the UDF government’s time by four ministers – Chief Minister, Revenue Minister, Education Minister and LSGD Minister. Mr V.S. Sivakumar MLA, former Health Minister said during the inaugural function, “I request the minister to take measures to ensure that the TRIDA bus shelter project, which solves traffic issues, is carried out at some other place. A masterplan for the school retaining its trees should be created,” he said. A Kathakali club  and a Kalari club were among the 17  clubs  inaugurated.
