Malappuram: The distribution of gold medal to the SSLC toppers among Arabic students in a government high school at Maranchery near Ponnani in the district has led to a controversy after RSS activists came up with strong protest.  The school authorities later dropped the function due to the opposition from the Sangh Parivar organisation.

The incident occurred on Monday at Maranchery Government High School. The school authorities organised a function to honour the toppers in SSLC examination which was inagurated by Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan. The distribution of gold medal to the Arabic students of SSLC who won A plus in all subjects and toppers of Mathemtics subject, was also among the schedule during the function.

However, a group of RSS men staged strong protest raising slogans against the function and they informed the school principal that they will not agree with the distribution of gold medal only to Arabic students. They have also demanded distribution of gold medal to toppers among Sanskrit and Malayalam as well.

The prize was sponsored by an Arabic teacher of the school and the gold medals were distributed to toppers in Arabic previous years also. The school authorities decided to drop the gold medal distribution following the request of Perumpadappu police.
