Kerala: MLA, civic body vice-president booked for abetment to suicide bid

Kannur: The state director of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Ms P. Girija, on Tuesday visited the dalit girl Anjuna in the hospital and recorded her statement. Anjuna, daughter of Congress leader N. Rajan, Kuniyil House, Kuttimakkool, Thalassery, had attempted suicide allegedly over the remarks of some CPM leaders against her. Commission chairman Dr P.L. Punia had said that he would seek a report from the DGP as well as the SP on the matter.
District Collector P. Bala Kiran on Tuesday submitted his reports to SC/ST Development Minister A.K. Balan, National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Kerala State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. State commission chairman P.N. Vijayakumar also visited Anjuna and recorded her statement. Other visitors included KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran.
Meanwhile, Thalassery police registered a case against Anjuna for attempting suicide and another case against Mr A.N. Shamseer MLA and Kannur district panchayat vice-president P.P. Divya for abetting the suicide attempt.
Anjuna had told the Kerala Women’s Commission chairperson and member that she took the extreme step following humiliation by the Left leaders openly and negative comments on the social media. Rajan had earlier requested North Zone ADGP Sudesh Kumar to register cases against Mr Shamseer and Ms Divya.
Mr Mullappally Ramachandran MP said that Mr V.S. Achuthanandan should make his stand clear on the issue of putting two dalit girls in jail on a fabricated case, along with an 18-month-old baby. Anjuna and elder sister Akhila were granted bail on Saturday in a case of attack on an DYFI leader. The sisters had questioned the DYFI leader on June 11 and other activists for calling them caste names. The next day, they filed a complaint with Thalassery police also.
