Kochi:  The police, who busted an attempt to abandon an  infant at Kalamassery a few days ago, have  intensified the search to locate the   child’s mother, who is said to be a minor.     “We’re yet to confirm the age of the girl as the probe is underway. A special team has been formed by the Alangad police to investigate the case with the focus on finding the mother of the infant. If she is found to be a minor, a case under POSCO Act and rape charges would be lodged against the youth (father) who is also hiding,” a senior police official said.

If the probe reveals that the girl is a minor, action will be taken against the authorities of a hospital at  Muvattupuzha where she gave birth to the infant, he said. The police had on Thursday taken into custody  Ebin Jose, who allegedly attempted to abandon the baby after receiving a contract of Rs 40,000. He had handed over the one-week old baby to Janaseva Sishubhavan on the night of April 13  saying he had found the infant abandoned by the side of the road. The NGO authorities alerted the cops immediately. However, the conspiracy unravelled when the police questioned Ebin Jose who admitted that he was given the money by the couple to abandon the child.
