HYDERABAD: Responding to a petition by TPCC senior vice-president G. Niranjan, the Election Commission of India gave a commitment to the Supreme Court that it would issue clarifications in Forms 6 and 6B which required the Aadhaar number for electoral roll authentication of new voters.

Appearing before a bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra, senior counsel appearing for the Election Commission told the apex court that submission of the Aadhaar number was not compulsory under Registration of Electors (Amendment) Rules, 2022.

The undertaking was made in a petition pointing out issues with Form 6 (Application form for new voters) and Form 6B (Letter of information of Aadhaar number for the purpose of electoral roll). The ECI informed that 66,23,00,000 Aadhaar numbers had been uploaded in the process of finalising electoral rolls. Advocate Narender Rao Thaneer and AOR Shravan Kumar Karnam argued on behalf of Niranjan.
