Thrissur: The BJP in Thrissur declared a district-wide dawn-to-dusk hartal on Saturday over the alleged murder of its activist at Edavilangu in Kodungallur police station limits. The deceased Vallathu Promod, 38, suffered fatal internal head injuries after a group of four CPM men allegedly hit him with a brick during a victory procession in two cars and tippers at 2 pm on Thursday.

The local BJP unit in Thrissur alleged that four CPM assailants of the BJP man were involved in similar crimes earlier and their details have been handed over to Kodungallur police. Promod, who was working overseas, had come home on a one-month leave. He is survived by his wife Neethu.

He was first admitted to a private hospital in Kodungallur and then to Co-operative Hospital in Irinjalakkuda. Later, he was shifted to Aswini hospital in Thrissur for a surgery on the head. However, his life could not be saved and he died at 1 pm on Friday at the hospital.

Kodungallur CI Siby Tom told this newspaper that the police were on the lookout for the culprits. The IPC Section 307 which was slapped on them for attempt to murder has now been changed to IPC 302 for murder, he added.

District Collector V.
