HYDERABAD: In a rampant show of laxity in duty and misuse of authority, power department officials issued an electricity bill of Rs 53,745 to a daily wage worker in Nizamabad and disconnected his power supply, claiming him to be a defaulter.

The action was taken without taking into consideration the fact that the consumer had only a fan and a light bulb installed and had an average electricity bill of Rs 200 till the last month.

The incident took place in Manchippa village during a visit by officials of the Telangana State Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSNPDCL).

The victim, Sune Suresh, requested the officials to rectify his power bill, but his pleas fell on deaf ears as they initiated action over bill default.

Addressing mediapersons, Suresh said that his family was living in the dark without a fan despite the onset of summer and that the power officials pressurised him to clear the total bill amount.

Vexed by the attitude and indifference of the officials concerned, villagers took to social media over the issue and the same went viral, with many lamenting the negligence of power employees.
