BENGALURU: The city has caught the chills. Bengalureans experienced bitter cold on Sunday as the absence of clouds over the city brought the temperatures down by nearly 4 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted the temperature to go down further in the coming days.

The director of Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Centre, Mr Srinivas Reddy, said, “The city started experiencing winter from the first week of December.

Though the temperature did not come down drastically in the first week, on Sunday the temperature dipped considerably.” He maintained that the winter is dependent on cold winds blowing from North India. Also, the temperature largely depends on cloud formation. In the first week of December, the afternoons were warmer as the clouds were hovering over the city. But on Sunday, the minimum temperature came down to 16 degrees Celsius from the earlier 20 degrees Celsius as there were no clouds in the sky.

IMD regional director, Mr Sunder Metri, said, “The maximum temperature will come down, but the fluctuations in the minimum temperature will be crucial this winter.”

Last year, the city witnessed the lowest minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius. However, the record for the lowest minimum temperature in the last 10 years was set in 2007, at 11.8 degrees Celsius.

The maximum and minimum temperature on Tuesday is expected to be around 26 and 15 degrees Celsius.
