Chennai: Couple on way to see son killed as car rams into truck

Chennai: A middle-aged couple died after their car rammed into a stalled truck near Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram on Tuesday night.

The deceased were identified as Goodwin Rajkumar(55) and his wife Swapna Selvakumari (50) of Thoothukudi.

Sources said Goodwin was a government employee and the couple lived in government quarters in Hosur, Krishnagiri.

According to police, the accident happened at around 9. 30 on Tuesday night, when the couple was travelling to Chennai to visit their son in the city. Police said the couple’s son is studying engineering in a private college in Kelambakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road.

Eyewitnesses said when the car was moving near Sriperumbudur, Goodwin lost control of the car and hit a truck stalled on Tambaram-Sriperumbudur road. In the impact, the front portion of the car was completely damaged and the couple seated on the front seat was crushed to death.  

The lorry driver fled the spot after causing the accident.
On being informed, Sriperumbudur police rushed to the spot and rescued the people from the car.

The bodies of  Goodwin and Swapna were shifted to Sriperumbudur government hospital for post-mortem. The police registered a case.
