Tungabhadra dam gets heavy inflows

Officials lifted six gates and were releasing 11,000 cusecs into the river, after performing poojas. The dam was receiving constant inflows of 64,000 cusecs.

Anantapur: The Tungabhadra reservoir is expected to fill up in a few days after eight long years, due to heavy rain in upstream parts of Karnataka.

On Wednesday, the dam had 91 tmc ft of water against its full capacity of 100 tmc ft. Officials lifted six gates and were releasing 11,000 cusecs into the river, after performing poojas. The dam was receiving constant inflows of 64,000 cusecs.

The same day last year, Tungabhadra reservoir held just 16.26 tmc ft of water.

Authorities sounded an alert to areas downstream about water being released towards Mantralayam.

The Tungabadra river passes through Hampi in Bellary district and enters Andhra Pradesh at Mantralayam in Kurnool district.

The water submerges temples and historic structures between Hampi and Mantralayam.

Among these are the Lord Srirama temple, Purandara mantapa and Lord Suryanarayana temples.
