Chennai: Of 7.31 lakh students who appeared for NEET (National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test) phase 1 and phase 2 this year, 4.09 lakh students have qualified for medical admissions.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released the combined results on Tuesday, a day before the scheduled declaration of results. Of 4.09 lakh students, 2.26 lakh are girl students. 1.83 lakh are boys.

For 15% all India quota in state medical colleges 19,325 students got qualified. Het Shah from Gujarat is the all India topper with the 685 out of 720 marks. B.Akshaya Kumar from Chennai is the state topper with 141st rank. He scored 615 out of 720 marks.

“I am happy to score high marks in the Neet exam. I got 75th rank in AIMS entrance exam. I got a seat in AIMS in Bhubaneswar, but I am hesitant to join as it is a new college. I waited for Neet exam results as I wanted to join in Madras Medical College,” he said.

His father M.Balagopal and mother Mala Balagopal are both doctors. He studied at Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School in KK Nagar.

He wrote only the Neet-1 exam as he thought he would not be in right frame of mind to write the Neet-2 exam. J. Sandeep from DAV boys school Gopalapuram got rank 858. He secured 569 out of 720 in Neet-2. He said, “The JEE preparations and confusion over Neet distracted my attention. For the Neet-2 exam, the one and half month’s gap helped me to prepare well.”

“I will either select the Christian Medical College in Vellore or Madras Medical College in all India quota,” he said. His parents Jayaprakash, Nalini Jayaprakash also are doctors.

Steven Lionel, the son of doctor parents, was overjoyed following the results. “Though I studied at Ida Scudder School which follows the ISC syllabus, I had to prepare thoroughly as the CBSE syllabus was different, especially for Biology. I scored 503 and have ranked 7000. Christian Medical College, Vellore is my first preference,” he said.

Jean Thomas John, assistant director, Akash Educational Services Limited, Chennai said “Overall the students have performed well in the Neet exams. Still, the cut-off has gone down. This year Neet-2 exam was little tough compared to Neet-1.”
