Dumping of meat waste raises offal stench in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The IT capital, which has found itself unable to qualify for a decent Swachch Bharat ranking, is facing a new problem: a huge jump in the dumping of animal meat waste across Bengaluru, particularly, the service road of Outer Ring Road.

The city's civic body Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is faced with this new challenge as it is getting more and more complaints of animal meat waste dumping with the stench emanating from it upsetting local residents who have made this sparsely populated area their home.

This has prompted the BBMP to deploy marshals at designated spots.

Meat-stall owners and people working there are allegedly dumping the waste at isolated spots especially in the interior areas or the service road of Outer Ring Road as there is hardly any movement of people there. In the last few months alone, meat and offal dumping has attracted
stray dogs and pushed up the rodent menace.

“Dumping of meat waste is now one of the biggest problems as it is becoming difficult to curb. Meat stall owners dump the waste in interior areas and residents have started complaining of the unbearable stench,” said a senior official in the solid waste management wing of BBMP.

“We are planning to deploy marshals at such spots and we have also decided that people caught dumping animal meat waste should be handed over to the jurisdictional police and a criminal case booked against them," he added.
Another official revealed that the animal meat waste that is dumped indiscriminately on the roads saw even the garbage clearing staff, known locally as Pourakarmikas, refuse to clean it up due to the stench. 
"The issue has been taken up seriously and stern action will be taken against people who dump the waste anywhere outdoors. We have vehicles to collect this waste and that's what the meat stall owners should make use of," he said.
