Thiruvananthapuram: The police has concluded that the death of a young man, whose burned body was found at Sucheendram in Kanyakumari district four months ago, was a murder. The youth, identified as Akash, 22, of Kadinamkulam, was involved in a series of vehicle theft cases.

The police arrested two women, Alphonsa of Valiyathura and her daughter-in-law Reshma of Manacaud in the case. Search is on for Alphonsa’s son and Reshma’s husband Anu, 27, and his friend Jithin alias Jithu, 22, of Kazhakootam. City Police Commissioner P Prakash told reporters here that the alleged murder was committed on March 30. Dispute over sharing of the loot led to the crime. The accused were Akash’s accomplices. The partially burned body of Akash was found in a secluded place at Kottayadi near Shucheendram on April 1.

The probe into the name of the girl tattooed on the victim’s arm led to the discovery of his identity. The accused had brought Akash to Anu’s two-wheeler workshop at Valiyath-ura. For this purpose Reshma contacted him over phone. They intoxicated him by serving liquor laced with sedatives. Afterwards, he was strangled to death using a shawl.

Anu, Reshma and Jithin later went to Kollam with Akash’s mobile phone in a bid to mark his presence there. After that, they updated his Facebook status saying that he was going to Pathanamthitta. Then they abandoned the phone and  returned. Lat-er they hired a Mahindra Scorpio car and took the dead body and dumped it after burning  at Suchee-ndram.

They killed Akash as he threatened to expose the gang after he became disappointed with the way the loot was shared among the members of the gang.
