The forest department will install CCTV cameras and set up a command and control room soon in Tirupati to keep a watch on trespassers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police will seek installation of cameras along newly-widened highway stretches to check the rampant lane indiscipline and  speeding. Several speed cameras on Kazhakoottam- Kovalam stretch of bypass were removed for road widening. Also, the newly- widened Karamana-Pravachambalam stretch lacked adequate cameras. The speed cameras will be installed in consultation with transport departments.

“Police departments do not  enforce lane discipline directly. So, we will install new cameras and aggressively issue chellans to those violating rules,” said  Mr P. Prakash, city police commissioner. In February, the Additional  District Magistrate had announced strict implementation of lane discipline on major roads. These  include Kesavadasapuram-PMG stretch, Kaudiar-Palayam stretch and Palayam- East Fort of MG road. Vellayambalam- Vazhuthacaud road and Vellayambalam-Shasthamangalam road also were found prone to  lane indiscipline.

“Lane indiscipline has been a common factor across the state. Awareness campaigns will also be organised to ensure that slow- moving vehicles will occupy left lane on the road,” he added. Crippling accidents involving two-wheelers and buses were rampant on Karamana-Pravanchambalam stretch of highway as slow- moving vehicles get tailgated by fast-moving ones.
