Cancer centres across Kerala to prevent patients' travel
Patients undergoing treatment at RCC Thiruvananthapuram advised to continue their follow-up treatment at nearest centres
Kochi: Kerala has set up cancer care centres in all 14 districts in the state, in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak and the subsequent national lockdown.
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan while talking to media persons said that 22 cancer care centres have been set up in association with the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Thiruvananthapuram.
“The decision has been taken to set up Cancer treatment facilities in all districts considering the low immunity and high vulnerability of cancer patients. If infected with novel coronavirus, their condition will be serious. It will be risky for them to travel to distant places to access cancer treatment during these times,” said Pinarayi Vijayan.
Facilities at the centres will be expanded in the future with the support of other regional cancer centres, said health minister K K Shailaja.
“Those patients from all parts of the state undergoing treatment at RCC Thiruvananthapuram can continue their follow-up treatment like chemotherapy and palliative care at their nearest centres. Doctors at RCC will hand over details of the patients to the local treatment centres and will finalise the treatment procedures through teleconference,” added the health minister.
