KANNUR: The Kannur district administration has mooted fixing Point of Sales (POS) swiping machines in institutions providing essential service to tackle the shortage of currency notes. District collector Mir Muhammed Ali has requested all service providers to install the machines at the earliest with the help of the banks. The machines are given free of cost by the banks. The collector had called a meeting of major banks in the district to discuss the scheme on Sunday which was coordinated by the lead bank manager.
The interested institutions should contact the banks and if there are any problems, the SBI will aid them. “All have extended their cooperation to the scheme,” said the collector. “Priority will be given to hospitals, clinics and medical stores and the SBI has promised to install the POS within 48 hours,” he added. As many as 15 hospitals in Kannur have signed agreements with the banks and the implementation will start on Wednesday. “I have already spoken with the hospital authorities about installing the machine. We hope the public can get hassle-free health care and it will also lessen the strain on banks,” the collector added.
