Chennai cops can't help if you have wedding in family
The rumour gained more credence when a Tamil text was appended to it supporting the English text.
Chennai: The rumour-mongers are having a field day. They are spreading rumours saying there were means available to enhance the withdrawal limit if a person has planned marriage celebrations in the family.
One such rumour originating in Kanpur claimed the Government had made an exception for withdrawal of money for families which have weddings to celebrate. The message had gone viral in social networking platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook. The rumour gained more credence when a Tamil text was appended to it supporting the English text.
The message says if one has a marriage in his/her house, he/she can go to the Superintendent of Police with the wedding invitation and get a NOC signed by him after which the bank would allow the person to withdraw Rs 5 lakh. The message also instructs the receiver to circulate it widely for the ‘common greater good’ and has three mobile numbers for assistance. One of the numbers is that of Additional District Magistrate (Kanpur City) Avinash Singh. When contacted, Avinash Singh told Deccan Chronicle that the message was a hoax, and he had not issued any such orders as claimed in the message.
The other two numbers in the message could not be reached as one drew the message ‘out of coverage area’ and the other was switched off. It is also learnt that the official had lodged a complaint with Kanpur Police who had registered a case under the provision of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
“Except for the lettered, little will one will know that a Superintendent of Police (SP) cannot make such recommendations to either the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or any other banks as claimed,” said a senior police official.
