HYDERABAD: BJP Telangana state executive committee member Gudur Narayana Reddy on Tuesday urged the state government not to turn the Musi River into a river from hell and take up and complete a clean Musi programme immediately.

In a statement, Narayana Reddy said the cleaning and beautification of the Musi has remained on paper despite successive governments including the present BRS government, announcing allocations of crores of Rupees for the clean Musi project.

The BRS government also formed a Musi River Development Corporation that was given Rs 754 crore, but the corporation has spent only 3 per cent of the allotted funds in the past six years. “The government also said it will spend Rs 10,000 crore on the Musi and BRS leaders who visited London in the recent past said that they would develop Musi along the lines of Thames River. Fourteen bridges were planned across Musi at a cost of Rs 545 crore and an elevated skyway with an outlay of Rs. 4,240 crore along with four-lane radial roads costing Rs. 2,354 crore,” he said.

The government, Narayana Reddy said, must take up the Musi project and protect the river for future generations.
